Which performance of Hamlet's "To be or not to be" soliloquy is best and why?
What is the criteria that makes it the best performance? Was is Kenneth Branagh? David Tennant? Mel Gibson? Laurence Olivier?
That is a hard question. I really enjoyed all of them, but there are so many different takes on the character at the time of the soliloquy that it's difficult to compare. Does Hamlet know Claudius was watching? Is he performing his madness for the benefit of the king? Or does he believe he's completely alone and really having a mental crisis?
I suggest watching the scene in Season one of a Canadian show called Slings and Arrows where the character of Geoffrey Tennant explains to his Hamlet what he needs to pull off the difficult role.
